About Us

History

YMV started in the fall of 1991. Homeschoolers had a need for a musical outlet. While private lessons were available in the community, there was no opportunity for a group experience. So with that in mind, a retired band instructor, Mr. Carroll Bailey, was approached about starting a homeschool band. An ad was put in the Bayith and YMV began as a cooperative with four students and a page turner. (It was called Young Musicians of Virginia several years later.) It met for one hour, two days a week. We began with one Intermediate Band class (two trumpets, two flutes). It grew to a Beginning and an Intermediate level. Strings were added in the third year. Choir began in the fifth year. The rest is plain to see. Just look at a registration form of classes available! Music classes have expanded to Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Bands; Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Strings, five Choirs serving all ages, three Handbell Choirs, Theory, Preschool and Elementary Music programs, Ensembles and Private Lessons in every instrument. A new addition this year is a School of Harp Studies.  We have developed a community program called Music Alive! for four - nine year olds.

While music is the core thrust, YMV also offers other selected academic courses. These target families with 8th-12th grade students that attend the music program. In an effort to maximize the student's time on Tuesday and Friday at YMV, upper level Math, Science, Spanish and French, English, Speech and Writing, History, Government, Art and Drama have been added.

Today, YMV serves homeschool families and the community with a faculty and staff of over 40, dedicated to teaching and training students from Preschool through High School. Their commitment is not only to teach music, but to teach life lessons and Godly principles through music.

The YMV program is intended to enhance and support - not take the place of - the homeschooling experience. In addition, we are dedicated to assisting the homeschooling parent to provide their children with extracurricular musical opportunities, such as summer music camps, seminars, concert opportunities, performances and ministry outreach.

We gratefully use the facilities of Kempsville Baptist Church located at 5204 Princess Anne Road in Virginia Beach.  If you are on Witchduck Road coming toward Princess Anne, you will turn right.  Turn right onto Overland Drive (2nd street on the right).  Enter the church parking lot.  You will find us by coming into VISITOR ENTRANCE A.  If you are coming toward Princess Anne on Kempsville Road, you will turn left.  The rest of the directions are the same.  Classes meet every Tuesday and/or Friday.

While we are Christian in principle and philosophy and our faculty must have a Christian testimony, we gladly accept students of any race and religion. Personal philosophy in no way compromises the acceptance, loving instruction and quality guidance a student will receive.
